Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Morning, especially in November when Arashiyama is a problem. Be on the lane early and leave toward the river, not toward the bamboo.

Saga-Toriimoto is a preserved street of townhouses on the way toward Arashiyama, before the bamboo grove. Stop here. Do not continue into the grove at noon. The street is the gem. The grove is the crush.

The short version

The lane kept its traditional houses when the approach to Arashiyama became a route. It is a preserved townscape, which means rules about the buildings and a quieter kind of walking. Treat it as a neighborhood that agreed to stay legible, not as a theme park entrance.

Food nearby

Tofu or noodles away from the grove gate

Arashiyama’s tofu lunches can be good and can also be a tour-bus product. Eat on this street or just before it, at a room that is not timing seatings to a coach. If you see the coach, you have walked too far.
