Best season House tickets are first come, first served. The Park Service says summer and October can sell out early. A weekday morning is the calm visit. Grounds hours change with the season.

Drive About 1 hr 45 min–2 hr 15 min

General guidance from Midtown to Hyde Park. Metro-North to Poughkeepsie plus a taxi is the train version. Check the timetable.

Parking. At the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center. The house is a 5–10 minute walk from the desk. Do not drive up to the front door.

Springwood, the Roosevelt family house, run by the National Park Service. The house is a guided tour. The grounds and the rose garden are free. The presidential library next door sells a separate ticket.

Worth knowing

  • Tickets

NPS lists the house tour at $15 for ages 16 and older, free for 15 and under, sold first come at the visitor center. No individual reservations. Cards only. The library is another $15. The grounds and rose garden are free.

  • Two houses

Springwood and the Vanderbilt Mansion are one morning if you plan it. Eveready is on Route 9 between errands, not inside either gate.

With kids. The Park Service says visitors 15 and under are free on the house tour. The tour is guided and includes stairs. The grounds are the easier hour if a ticket is gone.

With a group. Individuals cannot reserve. A public group of 20 or more, and motor coaches, must reserve. NPS points that booking to Recreation.gov.

The short version

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in this house and is buried in the rose garden, with Eleanor Roosevelt. The Park Service gives the house tour. The library and museum are a different institution on the same lane. Tickets are not interchangeable.
