Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday
Best season Summer if you want a lifeguard season. The park is a beach in other months too, colder and emptier. Do not invent swim hours.
Drive About 2.5–3.5 hr
General guidance from Midtown via Route 27. Traffic on a summer Friday can break the day. Go only if the beach is the whole plan.
Parking. A state park lot. A vehicle fee applies in season. When the lot is full, the day is over. Do not park on the dune road.
A state park ocean beach and campground at the east end of Long Island. About 120 miles from Manhattan. A long day, not a two-hour hop. The Walking Dunes sit on the Napeague stretch nearby.
Worth knowing
It is far
Leave early or stay over. A there-and-back from Manhattan is a long day. Check the park site for camping and the vehicle fee instead of trusting a number in a roundup.
The short version
Hither Hills is a New York State Park on the Atlantic, west of Montauk village. Camping and a vehicle fee in season are park business. Dollar amounts change. Read parks.ny.gov. This page does not quote a fee it has not rechecked.
Food nearby
Montauk village, or a cooler
The beach is the meal only if you packed it. Montauk has docks and ordinary restaurants after.
Farms and stands nearby
Amber Waves Farm and Market
A nonprofit teaching farm. The market sells vegetables, fruit, herbs, grains, and flowers they say they grow on site, plus locally sourced meat, cheese, bread, and pantry goods. The kitchen sells food to take away.
Season. Their site says the Amagansett market is open every day, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., year-round, at 367 Main Street. The kitchen is 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A smaller shop at 64 Park Place in East Hampton is listed 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The year-round grocery stop for a campsite at Hither Hills. Amagansett is west of the park, on the way from the city. The site does not print a cash-only rule.
Official pageMontauk Farmers' Market
Seasonal. A village market hosted by the Montauk Chamber, at the Village Green, 742 Montauk Highway. A chamber article names Feathertop Farm, Island End Farms, Sand and Soil Farm, Ocean to Earth Gardens, Mecox Bay Dairy, and Fort Pond honey, plus prepared-food stalls. That list is not a promise for every week.
Season. Seasonal, on Thursdays when the market is running. The season those pages printed is over. Nothing on this line is an upcoming date.
East of the campground. A county list also mentions a Friday. That line looks like a leftover. Do not plan a Friday from it. Read the current page before you go.
