Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season Year-round, best on a weekday. Summer weekends bring picnics, still nothing like a trailhead with a shuttle. Morning light on the water is the hour.

Drive 40 min

From downtown San Francisco via the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge area, about 40 minutes without a backup. Closer than it feels.

Parking. Small lots along North San Pedro Road. A state park fee applies. The village lot is the one you want. It is not a marina.

China Camp is a bayshore state park with a 19th-century Chinese shrimp-fishing village still standing on the point. The beach is gray and quiet. The picnic tables face the water. It is under an hour from a city that thinks nature is a redwood queue.

The short version

Chinese fishermen built a shrimp camp here in the late 1800s. Anti-Chinese laws and later bans on the fishing method collapsed the industry. A few buildings remain, with a small museum in the village. Read them. The shore is pretty, and it is also a labor history.

Food nearby

A picnic, then San Rafael if you are still hungry

There is no restaurant in the park. Pack lunch. If you need a plate afterward, eat in downtown San Rafael, not at a ferry-terminal snack concept.

A game nearby

Oakland Roots or a San Rafael amateur match

You are in the North Bay, close enough to an East Bay USL night if the calendar lines up. Otherwise a local amateur game. Do not cross the bridge for a big-league atmosphere.
