Good for a big group

Best season Year-round, in the evening. Hafnarfjörður is a short drive. You do not need a tour bus.

A Viking-themed restaurant and hotel in Hafnarfjörður, about a quarter-hour from downtown Reykjavík. The theme started in 1990. It is a show and a meal, not a Viking archaeological site.

Worth knowing

  • What it is

Go for a themed dinner. Do not go expecting a historic site. Address they publish: Víkingastræti 1–4. Feast nights are the busy product. Ask what is on.

With a group. The room is built for groups and feasts. Their site has described hundreds of seats. Book. It is not a drop-in counter.

The short version

The operators say an old house on the property was built in 1841 and was saved from demolition in the 1980s. Jóhannes Viðar Bjarnason bought the restaurant in 1990 and opened the Viking-themed room on 10 May that year. Viking feasts began in 1991. The décor is a choice. The longhouse is not a preserved hall from the 10th century.

Fjörukráin

Their menu talks about lamb and skyr and a feast with entertainment. Book if you want the feast. You can also just eat. It is not a quiet parish supper.

Best season Any month. The highway makes it a stop, not a pilgrimage you have to time. Weekends are busier.

A highway inn opened by Alex and Phyllis Madonna on Christmas Eve, 1958. Themed rooms, a copper café, a pink cake, a steakhouse. It is a landmark, not a hidden gem, and it is not in the state capital.

Worth knowing

  • Just the meal

You do not have to take a room to see the dining room. It is on a highway and it is famous. Go because the room is the point, not because it will be empty.

The short version

The Madonnas' own history says the first twelve rooms opened on 24 December 1958, and the main inn, with the café and dining room, followed in 1960. Boulders were built into the dining room. It sits at 100 Madonna Road, on Highway 101. Sacramento is the capital. This is a different city.

Copper Café or the steakhouse

You can eat without staying. The bakery's pink cake is the thing people come to see. It is a theme, and the room is not shy about it.
