Santorini

Oia, Santorini, Greece · 36.461° N, 25.376° E

Oia’s sunset is a stadium. The caldera path is beautiful and packed shoulder to shoulder by late afternoon. The Cyclades have other islands with the same light and a place to put your bag.

Milos

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season May, June, and September. August still fills the famous coves by late morning.

Milos is volcanic, pale, and still a fishing island. Sarakiniko’s white rock looks lunar and, outside the posted hour, you can hear the water. The ferry from Athens takes longer than Santorini’s airport dash. That is the point.

Local history

In 1820 a farmer on Milos found the marble that became the Venus de Milo, near the ruins of ancient Melos. The statue left for France. The island’s older trade was obsidian, then bentonite. The coast you swim from is that geology.

Food nearby

Grilled octopus in Mandrakia or fish in Pollonia

Eat where the boats are, not at a caldera cocktail bar you invented by habit. A short menu and a plastic table is the right room.

Sports, kept small

Island football, if a game is on

Milos football is local and small. Skip a Super League night in Athens. A harbor swim is the better use of the afternoon.

Folegandros

Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season Late May to June, and September. Winter ferries are sparse. Plan the boat before the mood.

The Chora sits on a cliff, white and closed against the wind. There is no cruise pier doing the work for you. You walk the squares, climb to the church, and eat when the kitchen is ready.

Local history

The hill town was built as a defense against pirates. The church of the Panagia above the rock became a place of pilgrimage. The squares and the cliff path are the visit.

Food nearby

The second square in Chora

Eat meze in town. The first square is the arrival. The second is where people stay. Do not expect a beach club, and do not go looking for one.

Sports, kept small

No second-tier match is worth the detour. The outing is the walk, the swim, or the town.

The cliffside Monastery of Hozoviotissa on Amorgos

Amorgos

Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season May–June and September. The monastery has hours and a dress code. Check both before you climb.

Amorgos is long, mountainous, and short on easy glamour. The monastery clings to a cliff. The port towns still feel like ports. People come because of a film, then find the hiking is the real appointment.

Local history

The Monastery of Hozoviotissa, traditionally dated to the late 11th century, hangs on the cliff above the sea. The story says an icon arrived from the Holy Land. The island later stood in for the deep water of Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, which raised its profile and still left it far quieter than Santorini.

Food nearby

A taverna in Katapola

Eat a simple grilled fish or a tomato dish in the port. The monastery steps are not a restaurant. Carry water for the climb and eat after you are down.

Sports, kept small

No second-tier match is worth the detour. The outing is the walk, the swim, or the town.
