Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season Year-round, on a weekday morning. The convent is cooler than the street. Check closing days before you cross town.

The tile museum sits in the Madre de Deus convent, east of the tourist center. The church is Manueline and gold. The great tile panorama shows the city before the earthquake. You look for what is missing downtown.

The short version

The convent was founded in 1509. The museum’s large panorama of Lisbon is a pre-1755 view, a document as much as a decoration. Tiles here are industry, religion, and street names, not a gift-shop pattern. Give the church ten quiet minutes.

Food nearby

A workers’ lunch in Xabregas

Eat near the museum, along the working streets, not a riverside terrace you detour to for the photo. A soup and a fish is enough. The tiles were the meal for the eyes.

A game nearby

Roller hockey in the eastern parishes

This side of the city is not a stadium district. A roller-hockey night in a local pavilion is the match that belongs here.
