Fushimi Inari’s gates

Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto · 34.967° N, 135.772° E

The lower torii tunnels are a moving walkway. The shrine is real; the photo scrum at the first gates is not the best of it. Kyoto has other shrine forests and valley walks.

Food
Shojin ryori or noodles in the village

Crowd level: Mixed. Go early, or pick a weekday

Best season Weekday mornings, April–June and October–November. If you arrive with a full bus, walk past the gate and out the far lane until the group is inside.

Ohara is a temple village in the north, with Sanzen-in and a walk among fields. Come at opening. By late morning the bus from Kyoto Station has arrived, and the village briefly becomes a queue with thatched roofs.

The short version

Sanzen-in is an old Tendai temple in a village that stayed rural while Kyoto paved the basin. The lanes and the Otonashi waterfall are the walk around the ticket. You are half an hour from the famous gates and in a different kind of day.

Shojin ryori or noodles in the village

A temple meal or a simple noodle lunch is part of the outing and priced that way. Eat it, then leave before the bus loop reverses. Do not add a themed café because the roof is thatched.

Kurama to Kibune

Food
Kibune kawadoko in summer, soba otherwise

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season May–June and October for the walk. Summer if the river lunch is the point. Avoid a national-holiday midday.

The trail from Kurama-dera over the ridge to Kibune is the visit. In summer, platforms sit over the river for lunch. The rest of the year, soba and the walk are enough. You came for the ridge, not a checklist gate.

The short version

Kurama-dera is tied to mountain practice and to a fire that rebuilt the temple in the 20th century. Kibune’s kawadoko, the dining platforms over the water, are a summer custom and not a cheap one. Book them, or walk and eat simply. Hoping is how you end up with convenience-store dinner at Kyoto Station.

Book a river platform in July and August if you want the meal the village is known for. The rest of the year, eat soba in the village you finish in. Carry water on the ridge either way.

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Morning, outside the May festival unless the festival is why you came. Weekdays in winter are nearly empty and very fine.

Kamigamo is one of the city’s oldest shrines, with a wide gravel approach and two sand cones that look like abstract art and are older than that idea. It is usually calmer than the torii tunnel. Go when the festival is not the reason.

The short version

Kamigamo Jinja, with Shimogamo, is a UNESCO site and a guardian of the city’s north. The shrine predates the capital’s grid. Aoi Matsuri in May fills it with purpose. Any other morning, the gravel is the sound of the visit.

Food nearby

Demachi Futaba’s mame mochi

After the shrine, eat toward Demachiyanagi. Demachi Futaba’s bean mochi is a sweet the neighborhood queues for, briefly and honestly. A soba shop nearby is the meal if you need one.

A game nearby

A university match near Kitaōji

Northern campuses are close. A posted university game beats a pro baseball night in Osaka. If nothing is on, the gravel walk was the exercise.
